Allegheny Triumph is a must for every library

This very readable book brings an often forgotten but very important case to light. It certainly belongs in every American academic law library, as well as in every high school, college and university library. It would be an excellent text book in high school civil classes and college civil rights courses.

Well-Researched & Fascinating Story

As little was recorded about Carrie Williams at the time, Kathleen Costantini had her work cut out for her in researching this topic. This is the most informative book you can find on Williams and her legal battles that have recently made her a sort of folk legend in West Virginia. This book is full of historical context that helps to lay the groundwork for the story. It’s well-written and easy to follow. I highly recommend it.

Timely read for us at this moment of our nation’s history

History and religion teachers might want to tell Carrie’s story as an example of what one courageous young woman could do to fight injustice and improve educational opportunities for those on the margins of society.

An Allegheny Triumph of Justice celebrates standing up for what is right in Jim Crow Era

A friend gave me a copy of An Allegheny Triumph of Justice. …….As an educator and a West Virginian, I was curious and started to read Carrie’s story.  I continued reading because the writing was very engaging and it reminded me of many things about West Virginia and life in the company controlled towns. I loved how the author took the time to establish the context in terms of time and place to provide the full impact of the victory that was achieved.   It is such a timely book related to equality and equity, and standing up for what is right.  I have already recommended the book to my sister who also started her teaching career in West Virginia and to my daughter who isn’t an educator but is engaged with movements for equality.  I enthusiastically recommend the book.

A True Triumph of Justice

The read is fascinating. The writing style is absorbing as it incorporates multiple historical timelines. The author doesn’t spoon feed the reader; she presents this as if it was her AP History class or a viable movie script. Great for high school American history and US government classes!

New Book Tells Story of Blackwater Heroes

Now the Williams/Clifford story has been retold in a comprehensive new book by Kathleen Costantini, titled “An Allegheny Triumph of Justice: Carrie Williams’ Courageous Fight for Equal Rights in the Early Jim Crow Era,” published by 35th Star Publishing. This new book brings together research from many sources, and is a significant and readable contribution to the history of civil rights in West Virginia.
